Welcome to Poznan

The vibrant and energetic town of Poznan was once Poland’s capital and today remains the capital of the Wielkopolska region. Lying midway between Warsaw and Berlin, Poznan is easy to access from almost anywhere in Europe, and although badly damaged in World War Two, the city has been restored beautifully. Poznan has a large student population and hosts many international trade fairs. Its thriving nightlife, stunning buildings, rich history and fascinating museums make it a wonderful and diverse place to visit. It's home to the last steam-powered passenger train in Europe and has sublime tranquil surrounding countryside, so when you choose a holiday in Poznan from JiveHippo.travel, you’ll enjoy a getaway that really does offer something for everyone.

Things to Do / Must-See Places

Many of Poznan’s main attractions are found around the rejuvenated old square known as Stary Rynek, and there are several fabulous bars and restaurants here that offer local fare to visitors. Dating back to the 14th century, the Ratusz, or Old Town Hall, is the most popular tourist attraction and has been re-invented as the Historical Museum of Poland. At noon every day two billy goats clash heads on the Town Hall clock, and this unusual display always draws in the crowds. Poznan is also home to one of three Museums of Musical Instruments in Europe, and you’ll find instruments from different cultures and ages on display here.
If culture and architecture pique your interest, a visit to the pre-Romanesque Archicathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul on the island of Ostrow Tumski is a must. It's recognised as Poland’s oldest church, with construction having been completed in the 10th century, and many important Polish rulers are buried here. Over the last thousand years, this architectural masterpiece has been added to and extended. Other attractions for those who enjoy delving into the past include the renaissance Hall, Franciscan Church, Mickiwicz Square and the cultural centre of Zamek.
For a taste of culture and to immerse yourself in the thriving nightlife of Poznan, you simply need to stroll into the market square after sunset and drink in the energy of the city. This hub of entertainment hosts nightclubs that close at dawn, pubs that serve delicious midnight snacks and restaurants that stay open very late. The large student population keeps the nightlife pumping, and a visit to the Old City after dark is a must for anyone who loves a party.
Outdoor activities in Poznan are perfect for any nature lover, and Lake Malta offers activities for the whole family. Spending a day here can see you enjoying golf, skiing, tobogganing, biking or simply catching some sun on the shores of the pristine lake that’s often used for local and international rowing competitions. To the east of the lake is the Poznan Zoo, and this can be reached by miniature steam train. Citadel Park is the largest park in Poznan, and you’ll be able to enjoy numerous outdoor activities here and pay your respects to former soldiers who were laid to rest in what was once a 19th-century vineyard.
Whether it's culture, history, nightlife or just the chance to spend some time in a town packed full of attractions that appeals to you, Poznan is a wonderful holiday destination.
